In an agriculture economy, weather is a critical factor. This is more so in arid lands, because the variability of rainfall increases as the amount of precipitation decreases. Thispaper reviews available data on weather and climate in the sahel- Sudan region of west Africa (Chad, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Sénégal and Upper Volta), examines the impact that man's activities may be having on the climate of the area and the potential for purposeful weather modification, and finally notes the need to take weather variability in to account in development planning for the region |
