In this book, assements are made of the changing conditions, the potential for development, and possible solutions to the problems of the arid regions. The first 12 papers represent an overview of the problems and potentials, as they are seen by experts from several different fields of the physical, biological and social sciences. The next six papers evaluate the existing conditions on the five continents that contain large areas of arid lands, with reference to their problems and potentials. The fourth group of six papers is devoted to discussions of the mechanisms and institutions for problem solving. Finally, two papers present a critical evaluation of the progress that has been made and note the direction that, in the opinion of the authors. |
